Today, there is no better day than today to start packing for the journey ahead. 2018 is a fresh new chapter in my story and yours as well. As we pack for the journey ahead, equipping ourselves with tools designed for mastery. We may feel a sense of unease of discomfort arise within our body, it’s a good sign… we’re leaning into discomfort into possibility.
Today, we are going to dive into part five and wrap up the Tools of Mastery series. As we work to clarify the 5 questions asked by George Leonard in Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment.
- How can you avoid backsliding?
- Where will you get the energy for your journey?
- What pitfalls will you encounter along the path?
- How can you apply mastery to the commonplace things of your life?
- What should you pack for the journey?
All of my favorite characters that I connected to as a child through video games, books, anime, movies… all have one thing in common.
They are all learners at the core of their being
Being a learner takes them out of their comfort zone. It gives them the space to make mistakes, which I like to call learning. They also don’t leave on their journey empty handed… they prepare themselves. Sure, maybe they don’t have everything they need when they embark on the journey, but they can acquire what they are missing as they need it.
So, let’s make a check list of a few things that will help you to accomplish your goals.
The Five Keys of Mastery:
- Instruction
- Practice
- Surrender
- Intentionality
- The Edge
Dealing with Change:
- Recognize that resistance will set in
- Be willing to work through the resistance
- Develop a support system
- Develop a set of rituals or practices
- Dedicate yourself to the process
Getting Energy for Mastery:
- Maintain Physical Fitness
- Acknowledge the negative and accentuate the positive
- Telling the Truth
- Honor but don’t indulge your dark side
- Set your priorities
- Make commitments
- Get on the path to Mastery and stay on it
Pitfalls Along the Path:
- Conflicting way of life
- Obsessive goal orientation
- Poor Instruction
- Lack of Competitiveness
- Over-competitiveness
- Laziness
- Injuries
- Drugs
- Prizes and Medals
- Vanity
- Dead Seriousness
- Inconsistency
- Perfectionism
Embarking on a journey to gain mastery, accomplish goals or make changes in your life…. won’t be easy. It will be simple, but not easy. Change is difficult, we will observe resistance in ourselves and others around us in response to our change. Change isn’t for the weak at heart, it will frighten you and make you scared, but I’d rather commit to that than to remain the same.
